Crown Reduction

Crown Reduction

A crown reduction is done to reduce the height and spread of a tree. This work should only be done when really needed. Doing this work to a tree creates a lot of cut points and therefore wounds. Once this process is started, depending on the tree species, it will need doing again every 3 to 7 years.

Thinning

Thinning

Thinning work can be done to remove cross over branches or dead wood or to remove some branches within the tree i.e. a crown thin. This does not reduce the height or spread like a crown reduction but does let more dappled shade through the tree.

Pruning can be done on fruit trees to encourage fruit spurs and growth.

Protected Trees

Protected Trees

There are usually two reasons for having to apply for tree work:

  • If the tree or trees are specifically protected by a TPO (tree preservation order). This does not mean that we cannot carry out any work but unless the tree is in a dangerous state we have to apply.
  • If your garden falls within a conservation area then depending on the size of your tree we may have to apply to carry out work. A conservation area is applied to a blanket area rather than putting a TPO on every tree.
